Our roopu
The Toi Whakataa Maori Print Collective was established in 2006 and emerged from a need to identify printmaking as a valid means of Māori artistic expression. The collective brings together a dynamic new generation of printmakers that are committed to pushing new ideas in their practice. The word ‘Whakaata’ carries connotations of mirroring, of revealing to light. Toi Whakaata aims to preserve, promote and develop Maori printmaking as an art form. The roopu is rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Te Ao Māori and passionate about creating prints that reflect their unique identity and culture. With their expertise in printmaking techniques and their deep understanding of Māori culture, Toi Whakaata is committed to producing works that not only celebrate Māori heritage but also challenge and expand the boundaries of printmaking as an art form. Through their work, Toi Whakaata seeks to bring greater attention to the beauty and diversity of Māori art, while also promoting the position of Māori artists within the broader artistic community.
